Step 1: Open your image in photoshop

To do that, go to the “File” menu and select the “Open” option. Then, go to your image location and select your image and then click on the “Open” button. Your image will be opened in photoshop afterward. 

Step 2: Copy the subject in the new layer

To copy the subject in a new layer, you can do it in several methods.

Method 1: Quick Selection Tool

  • Go to the left side’s tools panel and select the “Quick selection tool”. Now, brush over the subject. You will see that selection is selecting the area automatically. If you see that you have over selected, press & hold the “ALT” button and then brush over the over selected areas.
  • Now, go to the “Select” menu, then go to the “Modify” option and then choose the “Feather” option. Set the feather radius between 0.5. Then click on the “OK” button.
  • Now, press “CTRL+J” from the keyboard to copy the selected part in a new layer. You will see that the selected part is copied in a new layer “Layer 1”.

Method 2: Pen Tool Method

  • Go to the left side’s tools panel and select the “Pen tool”. Now, draw a selection path on the edge subject. After selecting that, convert the selection path into a selection line. To do this, press “CTRL+Enter” from the keyboard.
  • Now, go to the “Select” menu, then go to the “Modify” option and then choose the “Feather” option. Set the feather radius between 0.5. Then click on the “OK” button.
  • Now, you have to copy the selected part in a new layer. To do this, press “CTRL+J” from the keyboard. Selected part is copied in a new layer “Layer 1”

Method 3: Lasso Tool

  • Go to the left side’s tools panel and select the “Lasso tool”. Now, start the starting point of the lasso tool from the edge of the subject, then click & drag the cursor around the edge of the subject to create a selection path and then join the path with starting point, selection will be made.
  • Now, go to the “Select” menu, then go to the “Modify” option and then choose the “Feather” option. Set the feather radius between 0.5. Then click on the “OK” button.
  • Now, you have to copy the selected part in a new layer. To do this, press “CTRL+J” from the keyboard. Selected part is copied in a new layer “Layer 1”.

Method 4: Polygon Lasso Tool

  • Go to the left side’s tools panel and select the “Polygon Lasso tool”. You will find this tool under the lasso tool. Now, start the starting point of the polygon lasso tool from the edge of the subject, then click to another point, then click on another point, then click to another point, do this until you reach the starting point, you will see that every point is connected with the previous point with a straight line, and then join the path with a starting point, selection will be made. Polygon lasso tool is appropriate for box-shaped subjects.
  • Now, go to the “Select” menu, then go to the “Modify” option and then choose the “Feather” option. Set the feather radius between 0.5. Then click on the “OK” button.
  • Now, you have to copy the selected part in a new layer. To do this, press “CTRL+J” from the keyboard. Selected part is copied in a new layer “Layer 1”.

Method 5: Magnetic Lasso Tool

  • Go to the left side’s tools panel and select the “Magnetic Lasso Tool”. You will find this tool under the lasso tool. Now, start the starting point of the magnetic lasso tool from the edge of the subject, then hover your cursor around the edge of the subject, you will see that it is drawing the selection path automatically and then join the path with starting point, selection will be made.
  • Now, go to the “Select” menu, then go to the “Modify” option and then choose the “Feather” option. Set the feather radius between 0.5. Then click on the “OK” button.
  • Now, you have to copy the selected part in a new layer. To do this, press “CTRL+J” from the keyboard. Selected part is copied in a new layer “Layer 1”.

Step 3: Make outline

Now, we are ready to make an outline around the picture.

  • To do this, go to the layer panel, right click on the copied layer “Layer 1” and select the “Blending options” option from the context menu.
  • A layer style window will pop up. From there, go to the “Stroke” menu from the left side options. Now, on the right side, click on the “Color” option and select the white color. Then, set the “Size” as per your preference, and set the “Opacity” as per your preference. Then click on the “OK” button.
  • That’s it.
